FF8 and Dissidia
[ Personality ] :
When first meeting Laguna, most would cosider him a doofus. A ditzy idiot and completely harmless, no one anyone should worry about. And while Laguna is a doofus, he is certainly not harmless.
Laguna is a friendly, happy fellow. In fact he almost never comes off as angry, and only rarely sad or upset. He’s certainly a glass half full type of guy, and always has a chipper thing to say when things are getting down. He is the heart of any group, lifting spirits and slipping encouragement in his often ridiculous behavior. He is a kind hearted soul, helping others where-ever he goes, including Moombas and small villages and entire nations left without a leader.
Still, he is also a solider, and for as happy-go-lucky as he can be, he can and does take things seriously. While he hates hurting others or killing, he knows when the time to face forward and bite down are- though he’s still bound to talk and talk during a fight or any other dangerous situation... as proven when he threatens to give his friend Ward the ‘cuchi-cuchi treatment’ when they are about to jump off a cliff. He easily slips into the roll of a big brother type, and in Dissidia he often looks after the younger warriors, even if it’s often though keeping the mood light in the face of their rather grim circumstances. Still he manages to sneak in some strong points and thoughts on the world between his colorful comments.
Laguna has quite a few weakness though, most specifically women and children. A pretty girl has him fumbling and awkward without even trying, and he’s bound to stutters, start talking a mile a minute and even have a physical reason- usually a leg cramp. Over time he gets over it, but he will always make a fool of himself starting out. Children on the other hand can easily wrap him around their little fingers. He’s very good with them- probably because he’s very childlike himself. He’s also very curious, and something that perks his interest is bound to be followed even if it might not be wise. As he says in Dissidia , it’s not that he gets lost, it’s that all the other paths keep catching his attention.
Unlike his son, Squall, Laguna is a dreamer and an idealist. He wants to become a journalist professionally (and actually by his canonpoint he’s managed to have a few travel articels published) and travel the world seeing the sights and having a life long adventure... yet he’s also happy to settle down in Winhill and start a family. Both lives share the desire for an idealised life away from war and fighting and strife. For a military man he hates war and politics. Ironically he ends up righ tin the seat of politics due to his need to help others. After all he couldn’t leave a country in chaos due to his action in dethroning Adel. Still, even for his lack of much political talent his pure charisma and good intent changes Estar for good from a military monster to a seperate, but otherwise peaceful country.
But at his center Laguna is a brave and selfless man. Not once, but twice he fights losing battles because they are simply the right thing to do: once against Adel, and second against the manikins... the second during which he ‘dies’. He faces his certain doom with a resolute smile and an honest and firm belief in what he’s doing. He doesn’t brood, instead cheers the others onward while they all go to their deaths. That’s just the kind of person he is.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
+A trained and expert marksman
+friendly and easy going. Easy to trust
+trained in military means, including combat and survival
+experience being in strange worlds
-ditzy, flighty, easily distracted
- limited close combat ability
-awkward around women
[ Other Important Facts ] :
He’s married and unknown to him has a child. Said child is in Vatheon. He can also theoretically use para-magic if he gained a Guardian Force.
[ Sample ] :
Laguna woke up wet and confused. Of course this wasn’t the first time he’d woken up somewhere strange and having no idea how he got there, but he’d stopped that kind of behavior once he settled in at Winhill. Still, it certainly reminded him of the time him and the guys had gotten wasted and fell into a pool.
Though he was starting to suspect this had little to do with too much drinking with Kiros and Ward.
Still, the new tattoo wasn’t helping the belief either way. He sat, staring at the mark on his inner wrist while he tried to wring out his long hair with the other hand. It wasn’t something he’d normally get, but it wasn’t bad looking either. He could handle that.
The bright surroundings and watery appearance pushed the idea of a drunken escapade even further from his mind- in fact it made him remember another time he’d been in another world. A place with bright light and water all over the floor and a beautiful blonde woman...
Laguna winced a little, rubbing his head. His memories of Cosmos and her war had faded like a dream a good while back, but now they seemed clear and sudden, as if he had just fallen before the... munckins? Yeah that sounded right. He had *died*, right?
With a huff he shook his head, flinging more of the water out of his hair. He stood, popping his knees and dusting imagined dirt from his pants.
“No point worrying about it! Might as well take a look around...”
The gunner raised a hand to shield his eyes, scanning the area and spotting a huge choral. “Sure don’t see something like that everyday.” He quipped, jogging over with no fear. This was much too interesting to be scared of, after all!
